나는 항상 내가 태어나면서 자라온 모든 과정을 나의 본질에 담아 생각하며 작업을 해왔다

작년부터 Lime 이라는 재료와 minerals 광물질,

즉 인공적으로 만들어 낸 것이 아닌 자연에서 오는 소재를 작업에 사용하고 있다.

Lime과 minerals이라는 소재는 유럽 건축에서 빠질 수 없는 재료이며 집과 건물 모두에서 쓰는 가장 기본적인 재료이다

그래서 어쩐지 나에게 친밀감 있게 편안히 따뜻한 느낌으로 다가왔다.

어느 날 인류세라는 뉴스 기사를 본적이 있다.

인류세는 인류가 지구 지질이나 생태계에 미친 지질 시대 구분 중 하나로, 즉 인류가 태어난 이래 그 흔적이 고스란히 대지에 남는 것이라 했다.

대지의 지층은 퇴적해서 순서대로 쌓인다.

산업혁명 이후 우리 모두 알고 있는 환경적인 문제, 지구 온난화가 큰 예로 들 수 있다.

그래서 소재가 주는 그 느낌으로 생각한 것이 인류세이다. 나는 환경 전문가는 아니다.

또한 나만의 큰 실천을 하고 있지도 않다.

그래도 나처럼 누구나 한번쯤은 인식해야 하는 부분이 있고 나의 작품을 보는 모든 이들에게 각자의 인류세가 무엇인지 궁금하고 묻고 싶어졌다.

거북하지 않게 쉽게 접근하고 싶다.

그 문제들을 나의 작업으로 재해석 해보려 한다.

지나온 그 흔적들이 뚜렷한 무늬로 쌓일 수 있도록 나만의 형태, 컬러, 질감 세부 사항의 깊이와 끈을 만들어간다.

은폐되고 부서지고 매우 감정적인 부분도 시간차를 두고 나만의 정체성이 지나간 자리를 여러 번 나누어 층층이 쌓아 올린다.

어쩌면 Lime은 퇴적 되어진 결과물의 자연의 선물인것 같다.

Lime이 주는 편안함에 지속적으로 붙이고,뜯어내고,긁어내며,칠하는 과정을 지속적인 무한 반복을 통해서 나의 가장 안정적인 긴장감을 함께 표현한다.

이처럼 나의 차곡차곡 쌓여가는 작품들을 보면서 그것이 나만이 가질 수 있는 인류세가 아닐까 생각하며,

어쩌면 나는 지구 이 땅의 최대 빚쟁이란 생각도 함께 든다.

염치없지만 감사하다.

Meekyoung Artist Statement

I have always thought about the entirety of my life while working on my art. Since last year,

I’ve been using lime and minerals – materials that come from nature instead of artificial ones – in my work.

Lime and minerals are two of the most basic materials used in the construction of houses and buildings.

They are especially present in European architecture. Because of this, they fill me with a sense of familiarity and comfort.

When I started using lime and minerals, I immediately thought about a news article

I once read about the Anthropocene Epoch. It is the name given to represent our current unit of geological time and

traces back to the birth of humankind. Geologists interested in the Anthropocene dig through the layers of Earth’s crust to study human impact on the planet.

For example, geologists have discovered that global warming has been accelerating since the start of the Industrial Revolution.

Though I am not an environmental expert, and I am not making a significant personal effort to save the planet,

I believe that everyone, including myself, should understand how problems stack and change what already exists.

And I want to ask everyone who sees my work to peel back the layers of themselves and discover their own Anthropocene.

By creating clear patterns of color, texture, and form,

I intend to expose my own journey through my Anthropocene so that people can approach theirs easily and without discomfort.

By using lime, I will reveal the hidden, broken, and very emotional parts of myself, divided, layered, and

reinterpreted over time. Perhaps lime itself is a gift from nature as it itself is a result of accumulation.

And by continuously scratching, tearing, and painting with the comfort lime provides,

I am able to express my most stable tension. As I look at my works accumulate over time,

I feel as though I am discovering my own Anthropocene. It also makes me think that perhaps

I am the world’s biggest debtor. It is a shameless act, but I am grateful.
